praise through the creatures

Most high, all powerful, all good Lord!
All praise is yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing.

To you, alone, Most High, do they belong.
No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name.

Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures,
especially through my lord Brother Sun,
who brings the day; and you give light through him.
And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor!
Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness.

Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars;
in the heavens you have made them bright, precious and beautiful.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air,
and clouds and storms, and all the weather,
through which you give your creatures sustenance.

Be praised, My Lord, through Sister Water;
she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brother Fire,
through whom you brighten the night.
He is beautiful and cheerful, and powerful and strong.

Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Mother Earth,
who feeds us and rules us,
and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs.

Be praised, my Lord, through those who forgive for love of you;
through those who endure sickness and trial.

Happy those who endure in peace,
for by you, Most High, they will be crowned.

Be praised, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death,
from whose embrace no living person can escape.
Woe to those who die in mortal sin!
Happy those she finds doing your most holy will.
The second death can do no harm to them.

Praise and bless my Lord, and give thanks,
and serve him with great humility.

  1. Romans 1:20-25 (King James Version)

    20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

    22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

    23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

    25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

    • is there a reason you are so confrontational, aaron?

      i am not worshiping and serving the creatures, yet praising God through appreciating the divine beauty in His creation.

      using the Word of God to make someone else feel lesser, purposefully, is not very Christ-like.

  2. I just quoted a Bible verse warning of the dangers of worshiping nature rather than God. After reading this over and over, i cannot understand how it comes across as me being confrontational or making you feel lesser. I just wanted to warn that we have a God and it’s not a tree or mother earth or sister water or brother stream or sister moon. I just thought Assisi’s quote sounded a little up the ass of this “Gaia goddess of earth” style eco nonsense which I think is a very dangerous ideology that’s not rooted in Godliness at all.

    • hm, well from this side of it, it seems like you were being pretty confrontational.

      i agree that the “gaia goddess of earth” stuff is nonsense, but i also believe that God created all, and placed a spark of divine in everything He made. therefore, all creation is a reminder to worship Him… that’s all i was getting at.

  3. Good point. Ya know if someone tried to prove to me on paper that God existed I don’t think it could be proven to me. But it is when I see certain things in nature that makes me question the rationality of atheism or the theory of the “big bang” & evolution. I just don’t think that a dragon fruit (or humans for that matter) could be made by accident.

    • exactly! there is no way i can go sit outside on this chilly, rainy, cloudy morning and watch the leaves fall to the ground and not appreciate the handiwork of God. (sorry i was snappish in the last few comments- i hadn’t had any coffee…)

  4. i think anything that points to our Lord is great- be it nature, a bumber sticker or a t-shirt – i’m for it;)

    love you.
